Action in Holguin against teenage pregnancy

The General Directorate of Public Health in the province of Holguin acts, through several programs, in the prevention of teenage pregnancy, one of the risk factors with the highest incidence in the eastern territory, the third most densely populated in Cuba.

This strategy includes polyclinics, clinics, schools, which have a comprehensive program for the follow-up of this population group, involving social workers, activists, teachers and general practitioners.

Luis Orlando Castro González, deputy director of Public Health in the province, said that these projects include the active research of these adolescents in the community and the analysis of personal and environmental risk factors and behaviors, which have an impact on this problem.

In addition, educational talks, groups of interest on these issues and health promotion actions are programmed to promote responsible sexuality and parenting classes are held, an initiative that promotes family orientation, he emphasized.

He emphasized that gestation at this age is one of the main causes of preterm birth, low birth weight, as well as hypertension and gestational diabetes, among other complications, and requires exhaustive control to reduce complications.

Adolescent pregnancy is among the main causes of maternal death in women between 15 and 19 years of age worldwide and by the end of 2021, 18 percent of births in Latin America and the Caribbean will be to adolescents, according to the website of UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

In Cuba, multidisciplinary teams have been created in the 15 provinces and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud to address this psychosocial problem, which has among its main consequences the late prenatal control, increased abortion, as well as school dropout, emotional disorders and instability in the home.
