The University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo), among those with the highest enrollment in Cuba, promotes doctoral training programs, as part of the processes of improvement of Higher Education in the country.
This institution, located near the Lening hospital, is one of the five higher education centers in the Caribbean nation, certified for the granting of this scientific degree, one of the priorities to guarantee quality in the teaching-learning process of new doctors.
Galina Garcerán Chacón, rector of the university, told Agencia Cubana de Noticias that undergraduate students with research interests in areas such as Biochemistry, Natural and Traditional Medicine and other fields of interest in doctoral theses are monitored.
She specified that three fundamental lines are taken into account: Comprehensive Care for Children, Adults and the Elderly; Treatment of Surgical Patients in Pediatric Age and Didactics of Medical Sciences.
These allow contributing to the resolution of health problems in the territory, taking into account the improvement of assistance in hospitals and polyclinics and a better professional practice, said the directive.
Garcerán Chacón added that this type of training also has a positive impact on the specialty accreditation processes, which include improvement as one of the essential requirements.
In 40 years, UCMHo has graduated more than 45,000 students of some 35 nationalities, including African and Latin American countries, and links young people to family doctor and nurse practitioners’ offices, hospital emergency services, among other services in great demand by the population.
