The civil work of the Caletones desalination plant, in the municipality of Gibara from Holguín province, is being executed as part of the actions to guarantee access to drinking water in vulnerable neighborhoods.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told ACN that the plant is a donation from Japan and has a capacity of six liters per second, which will improve the quality of life of the population.
This construction stage includes digging the leveling wells and quantifying the pipes necessary for the operation of the facility, which is expected to start operating this year, said the executive.
At present, this coastal community receives the service through tanker trucks, therefore fuel expenses will be reduced and it will respond to one of the main demands of the residents, he said.
He emphasized that in the municipality, some 30 kilometers from the provincial capital, repairs are also being carried out on pipelines, correction of leaks and cleaning of dams, with the aim of improving the service and contributing to environmental sanitation.
The water treatment plant in Cueto, the search for new sources in rural areas and places hard to reach, as well as investments for water supply in Ramón de Antilla and other areas of tourist interest are also being carried out.
In the sector, flood zones are also eliminated, new customers are incorporated to the aqueduct and sewage systems, among other works in the eastern province, the third most densely populated in Cuba.
