A new ice plant, currently in the start-up phase, will benefit the fishing community in the municipality of Gibara, in the province of Holguin, as part of the government’s efforts to implement local production systems as part of local development strategy.
José Raúl Proenza Aguilera, head of Gibara fishing zone, told to the ACN that having an ice plant again is a significant achievement for both the fishery and the population, since it will allow to offer the surpluses to the inhabitants of the the also nicknamed Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos.
The industry, of Chinese manufacture, is designed to produce 10 tons in 24 hours, a capacity that allows guaranteeing the supply of ice necessary for the 23 vessels dedicated to non-state commercial fishing linked to the company, as well as for the 24 mini-docks located there, which due to their location lack electricity, Proenza Aguilera emphasized.
Likewise, its entry into operation will offer an economic response to the entity and will have a social impact, benefiting especially the fishermen, for whom ice is vital in their activity and a requirement to preserve the productions with the required quality, he said.
The infrastructure of the factory existed for years, but this new investment is the result of a cooperated action between the importing company, construction entities, refrigeration and electricity company, which in record time mounted the bank of transformers necessary for its operation, acknowledged the manager.
Andrés Ricardo Rivas, president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, commented that one of the major problems faced by the fishermen was that, after spending some time at sea, some fish arrived in poor condition due to their perishability.
In the short term, he said, this investment solves a problem in the sector and will offer a productive response by making it possible to extend fishing campaigns on the high seas, guaranteeing that the catches do not spoil and maintain their freshness.
We hope that from now on that fish will arrive as fresh as possible for selling them to the population and also to the tourism sector, to market seafood products to both national and international visitors, thanks to the interaction between the different forms of management, said Ricardo Rivas.
He also commented that among the varieties that distinguish the gastronomy of Gibara beyond its borders include crab, crayfish, shrimp, oysters and coquina, as well as shelf catches such as cojinua fish (yellow jack) and mackerel fish that some time in the year they are seen in the northern coast of the country.
This chaining will make it possible to offer a wide range of products, supported by a book of culinary recipes that describes more than 340 typical dishes of the local cuisine, concluded Ricardo Rivas.
The municipality of Gibara, located in the northern part of the province of Holguín, was recognized by the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba as outstanding for its advances in economic and social indicators, on the occasion of the celebrations in Holguín for the 26th of July celebrations.
