Some investments aimed at contributing to environmental protection are being carried out in the five municipalities of Holguin province linked to the State run program Plan Turquino, as a strategy to promote sustainable development and improving the quality of life of the highland population.
Geovany Zaldívar Martínez, deputy delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, told the Cuban News Agency that during the beginning of the coffee harvest, maintenance actions were carried out on 22 pulping machines and ecological facilities of this type are in operation in places such as Naranjo Agrio.

Zaldívar Martínez highlighted that the septic tank of Farallones de Moa was completed and work is being carried out in the oxidation lagoon of Pueblo Nuevo, in Pinares de Mayari, for the treatment of residual waste, in addition, during this year, the conclusion of the system of Calabaza de Sagua dedicated to this purpose is foreseen.
In that geographic area, 50 houses were also connected to alternatives for the processing of sewage waste, which contributes to solve the dumping in those prioritized areas, he said.
Twenty percent of Holguín’s territory is made up of mountains, distributed in the municipalities of Cueto, Mayarí, Frank País, Sagua de Tánamo and Moa, which treasure more than 500 species of flora and fauna exclusive to those ecosystems.
These settlements also have a group of programs that guarantee water supply, medical assistance, healthy recreational practices, cultural development, new sources of employment, among other options to improve the living conditions of their inhabitants.
