The municipality of Gibara, some 30 km from the city of Holguin, has achieved favorable results in health parameters, as part of the program to improve this sector in Cuba.

This coastal territory is working on the prevention of teenage pregnancy, the reduction of infant mortality indicators, in addition to the follow-up of vulnerable populations, which made it stand out during the celebrations for July 26, National Rebellion Day.

Jaime Pérez Balmaseda, mayor of the locality, told ACN that the family doctor’s and nurse’s offices have coverage, health promotion and the training of new professionals are being reinforced.

Likewise, assistance is guaranteed in rural areas through polyclinics with hospitalization services or the local hospital itself, as well as specialized consultations in settlements that are difficult to access, he pointed out.

He stressed that an investment is being made for the change of Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital headquarters to the former Psychiatric Hospital, which is 90 percent completed, and the opening of the on-call service and outpatients’ offices is expected to take place soon.

He indicated that the Maternal and Infant Care Program continues to provide follow-up at the primary and tertiary levels for pregnant women at high risk due to their age or chronic pathologies, together with internal medicine, cardiology and stomatology services.

The territory also excels in vocational training activities, the continuity of studies of integral general practitioners and the promotion of investments to improve the infrastructure conditions of the buildings.

Holguín has medical assistance improvement programs in its 14 municipalities where priority is given to the use of Natural and Traditional Medicine, the follow-up of children under one year of age and the care of the elderly and the disabled.
