The installation of 11 center pivot irrigation machines, is part of the purposes of Holguin province to promote the use of science and innovation advances in the agricultural sector.
These systems contribute to water saving, increase efficiency and replace obsolete or faulty equipment, mainly in the mountain areas dedicated to the implementation of agro-ecological techniques.
Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, sub-delegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, stressed to the ACN that the strategy has improved agricultural work on more than 400 hectares and there are plans to continue installing these machines.
She stressed that 69 varieties of plantain and vegetables resistant to the adverse effects of climate change are also being cultivated, gradually generalized in the soil demonstration polygons and other areas dedicated to this purpose.
The executive said that there are 12 forestry farms in the territory and that economic incentives are being promoted for producers who collaborate with environmental protection and sustainable development, through objectives aimed at increasing crop quality and yields.
This strategy is also part of the implementation of the Tarea Vida, the Cuban State’s plan to confront climate change, extended to more than 70 municipalities in the country.
Holguín also benefits from two international projects that provide technologies, equipment and the necessary implements to increase coffee production in mountainous municipalities such as Sagua de Tánamo.
The province has five territorial programs that promote food production, the use of renewable energy and local development, among the issues prioritized by the government of the largest Antillean Island.
