The Provincial Center for Medical Sciences Information (CPICM) celebrates its 52nd anniversary this June 25 as the main coordinator and promoter of scientific development in the province of Holguin, an important task that contributes to the management of innovative knowledge.
The creation of CPICM has its antecedents in 1965, when the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) decided to create the National Center of Medical Sciences Information, due to the critical situation that existed in Cuba with biomedical information.
Already by 1969, the National Center decided that each of the provinces should create its own Center since the flow of information and the existing demands were greater, in addition, it was necessary to maintain and improve the scarce existing publications and to organize a national network of libraries to centralize in each territory the informative materials.
This is how this Center arose in 1972, at a time when there were only five libraries in some hospitals of the former Oriente Norte province, a historical evolution marked by overcoming and constancy that have resulted in the current management of 58 medical libraries throughout the province of Holguin.
Although it is located within the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo), methodologically it is subordinated to the National Center of Information of Medical Sciences.
It assumes among its main functions, besides the direction of the network of libraries of the province, the coordination of actions that guarantee the informative assurance in support to the plans of research, teaching and medical assistance.
It also plans, together with the Municipal Reference Libraries, activities related to the scientific informative task and is in charge of the direction and coordination of tasks and informative services of the libraries of the National Health Sciences Information System, belonging to the territory.
It is essential to participate in the identification of technical and professional improvement needs and in the design and execution of training activities. It even carries out the updating of the national databases with the scientific productions of the province.
Thus, the CPICM offers specialized and differentiated information services to users of high technical level and pays permanent attention to the programs and main health problems identified by the Minsap. At the same time, it uses information and communication technologies and promotes networking.
Today it is not possible to speak of the beginnings of the Medical Information System in the territory without linking it to the Provincial Center of Information of Medical Sciences, since its work in the development of the health system in Holguin is undeniable.
