Investments benefit municipalities hit by drought in Holguín

Areas hit by the intense drought in the municipalities of Cueto, Mayarí and Gibara are benefiting from new investments to contribute to water supply in those regions of Holguín province, the third most densely populated in Cuba.

Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, provincial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told ACN that in these places new water sources are being sought, work is being done in the drilling of wells and the installation of manual pumps, recovered from the movement of innovators.

He indicated that the supply is maintained by means of tanker trucks, in addition to the search for alternatives such as the habilitation of common reservoirs, among other strategies that facilitate the access of the vital liquid to the greatest possible number of inhabitants.

In the case of the provincial capital city, investments include the elimination of leaks and repairs to the water mains, which increases the quality of service, the executive emphasized.

At the same time, works such as the Caletones desalination plant in the municipality of Gibara and the Cueto water treatment plant are progressing, in addition to the guarantees of supply to the tourist resorts of El Ramón de Antilla, Pesquero and Guardalavaca, he said.

On the other hand, with the support of the United Nations Organization, rural and hard-to-reach areas are benefited with the installation of solar pumps and irrigation systems that benefit agriculture, and are integrated into the implementation of the Program for the Advancement of Women.

Holguín has more than 779,000 clients associated with aqueduct and sewage systems, which represents 76 percent of its population, and works such as the East-West Water Transfer and the Levisa dam are also being promoted to boost agriculture in rural localities.
