Holguin promotes delivery of means of support

The province of Holguin promotes the delivery of means of support to severely disabled people, as part of the social programs created by the Cuban Revolution in favor of vulnerable sectors.

These implements, among them canes, crutches and wheelchairs, have an impact on the inclusion projects of this population group, since they contribute to mobility and facilitate transportation to work or study centers.

Oslaidis Cruz, an official of the Cuban Association of People with Physical-Motor Disabilities in the province, pointed out that despite the limitations caused by the U.S. blockade, there is a workshop in the eastern territory to produce the accessories.

She indicated that annually some three thousand members of that organization receive these means used in their displacement, where priority is given to school-age children.

The official pointed out that as a way to maintain the vitality of this strategy, science and technological innovation are applied focused on the substitution of imported components, among them the ligatures of the spinal prostheses and the devices for the correction of the same.

She stated that solutions are being sought to guarantee the manufacture of the wheelchair braking system, which are currently received through donations, since they have more than 10 percent of components manufactured in the United States.

Holguin is one of the Cuban provinces with the highest number of people with severe disabilities and is promoting a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy, which includes the Health, Education, Sports and Culture sectors.
