Holguin to celebrate 30 years of Romerías de Mayo

The city of Holguin will become the world capital of young art, from May 2 to 8, with the arrival of the Romerías de Mayo, World Festival of Artistic Youth organized by the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) since 1994.

In this edition, Romerías de Mayo will celebrate its 30th anniversary, while dedicating a good part of its spaces to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the creation of the Cuban Film Institute and Casa de las Américas.

As announced by its organizing committee, this space of multicultural diversity par excellence, brings together cultural promoters and artists of various manifestations, who from various parts of the planet find in cultural exchange a vehicle for communication and peace.

For this reason, the AHS invites musicians, theater artists, researchers, dancers, writers, audiovisual producers, painters and cultural promoters to celebrate this celebration of tradition and modernity.

An essential moments of the Romerías de Mayo will be the Congress of Thought and Prize for Young Researchers Memoria Nuestra, whose debates will revolve around the general dedications of the event, in addition to the awarding of the Memory in Research and Sociocultural Project Prizes.

The emergence of the Romerías is due to the placement of a wooden cross on top of the Bayado hill (renamed by Holguin people as Loma de la Cruz), by the prior of the Franciscan order, Fray Antonio Joseph Alegre, in 1790.

Celebrated on May 3, the Pilgrimage of the Cross was one of the religious and popular events that arrived to Holguin with the Spanish conquest and colonization.

In the late 1950s, the tradition fell into disuse, however, in 1994 it was reinvented as a project of the AHS, then led by journalist and cultural promoter Alexis Triana. / Aniel Santiesteban García.
