In recent years, the survival rates of newborns have improved considerably thanks to the development of Pediatric Surgery, Neonatology, the Regionalization of Surgical Centers, the work of Genetics and the modification of protocols for the care of newborns in Holguin.
Hence the encouraging results obtained, such as the one hundred percent survival rate achieved this year by the Regional Center for Neonatal Surgery (CRCN for its Sapanish cronym) of Holguín, located at Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja pediatric hospital.
With more than twenty high complexity surgeries successfully performed this year, this result is due, to a great extent, to the professionalism of the multidisciplinary team that works there.
In this sense, Dr. María de la Caridad Osorio Mora, deputy medical director of the hospital, explains that “pediatric surgery has also had a wonderful result. Twenty-one surgeries have been performed on newborns to date and, to the privilege of all, with a one hundred percent survival rate for each one of them.
It is worth noting that patients sometimes require a second or third surgery. These are mostly neonates born with congenital malformations of the digestive tract. These include esophageal atresia, esophageal or intestinal stenosis, alterations of the abdominal wall”.
This center takes in newborns up to 30 days old from the five eastern provinces and Camagüey, who require complex surgical treatments.
Regarding the close work collaboration achieved between Vladimir I. Lenin Maternity Hospital and the CRCN in favor of the newborns born in the five eastern provinces and Camagüey, the health official exemplifies, “in the particular case of gastrochisis, a malformation of the abdominal wall, at birth with all the intestinal part on the outside, which demands a very intertwined relationship with the Neonatology and Gynecobstetrics group of Lenin hospital to perform the surgery as soon as possible, with a better prognosis.
When the intestines are in their amniotic fluid they are not so complicated, but once they are already on the outside, the prognosis really depends on this promptness and we have managed to have our pediatric surgeons move to the Lenin hospital and evaluate immediately, create all the conditions with the ambulance and a room waiting for him, with all the anesthesia equipment and move and perform surgeries less than 30 minutes after the birth”.
Key indicators of the Maternal and Infant Care Program (PAMI) in Holguín and in Cuba depend on the results of the Regional Neonatal Surgery Center.
Although during the current year this center has been seriously affected by the lack of resources, it is necessary to emphasize the effort, commitment and dedication of the team that integrates it, a principle that has led it to become a referent at the country level.
