On December 3, 1979, the first International Festival of New Latin American Cinema was inaugurated in Havana with the welcome of Alfredo Guevara, manager and president of the event, to more than 600 filmmakers from Latin America and the audience of film lovers from all over the world.
A dream of the region’s cinema began to come true, as a continuation of similar festivals such as those of Viña del Mar, Merida and Caracas, which brought together films and filmmakers representing the most innovative film trends in Latin America.
The Havana Film Festival would become, since then, the ideal space for the systematic confluence of creators, who had expressed the urgent need for a space like this for “the joint presentation of fiction films, documentaries, cartoons and current affairs”, as stated in the initial call for entries.
For 44 years, this has been the Havana Film Festival’s goal: to recognize and disseminate cinematographic works that contribute, based on their significance and artistic values, to the enrichment and reaffirmation of the Latin American and Caribbean cultural identity.
On this occasion, the event calls for fiction, documentary and animation contests, first films, unpublished scripts and posters.
In addition, meetings and seminars on various topics of cultural and cinematographic interest are scheduled, as well as the highlight of the event, a wide and representative sample of contemporary cinema from the rest of the world.
The Festival will come to Holguin
Cine Marti, Provincial Film Center, Holguin
The Holguin Provincial Film Center announced on its social networks that Holguin residents will be able to enjoy from the Calixto Garcia Park, between December 8 and 17, at 8 p.m., a special show in tune with the celebration of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.
The biggest film festival in the country has extended its offerings to other provinces such as Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey, Matanzas and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud, to make all of Cuba participate in the great cultural event, which is why Holguín will screen films presented and awarded in previous editions.
Among these proposals stand out “La odisea de los giles” (Argentina), “El ángel” (Argentina/Spain), “La llorona” (Guatemala/France), “El secreto de sus ojos” (Argentina/Spain), “Roma” (Mexico), “El ciudadano ilustre” (Argentina/Spain), “Una mujer fantástica” (Chile/Spain), “La ciénaga” (Argentina), “Amores perros” (Mexico) and “La historia oficial” (Argentina).
