Once again, the people of Holguín paid tribute to the internationalist martyrs this December 7, on the 34th anniversary of Operacion Tributo (Tribute Operation); to Antonio Maceo and his assistant Panchito Gómez Toro, 127 years after his kill in action; and to the Association of Veterans of the Cuban Revolution (ACRC), which on this day in 1993 was founded.
In a pilgrimage from the monument that commemorates lieutenant general of the Liberation Army to the Pantheon of the Fallen for the Defense, in Mayabe Cemetery, a representation of members of the ACRC, members of the Young Communist League (UJC), paraded together with students, education staffers and workers from various sectors of the territory.
During the event, at the place where the remains of the combatants are resting, along with their family members, wreaths were laid to pay posthumous tribute to the almost 60 men, who consecrated their lives for the freedom and justice bequeathed by proletarian internationalism.
Tribute, Cuban martyrs
Osmani Viñals García, first secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), in the events closing, ratified to the combatants the people’s gratitude for the work erected after years of struggle and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to do May the Revolution last forever.
Present at the tribute were Division General Ricardo Rigel Tejeda, head of the Eastern Army; José Raúl Pampillo de la Rosa, official of the Central Committee of the PCC, among other political and government authorities.
Holguineros, tribute to martyrs
On December 7, 1989, on the 93rd anniversary of Antonio Maceo’s death in combat, funeral services were held in all the municipalities of the country for the remains of the more than two thousand combatants who fell while carrying out internationalist missions, mainly in African lands.
