Respectful labor and birth project implemented in Holguin

Specialists from Octavio de la Concepción Pediatric Hospital and the Pedraja de Holguín Pediatric Hospital are carrying out a series of training activities on maternal care as part of the respectful child birth and child birth project being implemented in several Cuban provinces.

One of the purposes of this program is that during childbirth the mother can decide on the procedures and whether or not to be accompanied by a family member, Loida Cortés de Quero, a first-degree specialist in Maternal and Child Nursing at the institution, told ACN.

She specified that the training is aimed at professionals and is intended to replace the protocols imposed up to now during childbirth in health centers, which are restricted to the pregnant woman with the multidisciplinary team.

She emphasized that since the implementation of this program, the expectant mother will be able to decide the position, the medication, the company and other processes involved in the delivery, which until now were limited to the medical personnel.

The expert, who is also the provincial coordinator of Gynecology and Obstetrics nursing, stated that primary and secondary health care have a fundamental role in preparing families to classify this option, where pregnant women with high obstetric risk are excluded.

The healthy labor and birth project emerged, theoretically, in 2017 and is also implemented in Havana, Sancti Spíritus and Pinar del Río, under precepts of promoting exclusive breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby.
