The hydraulic resources system in the province of Holguín has now more than 50 photovoltaic pumping systems, as part of the energy matrix change program, one of the sector’s priorities in Cuba.

Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of the sector, emphasized to ACN that this equipment has made it possible to save around

of around 20,000 liters of fuel since it was put into operation more than a year ago, in addition to providing greater quality and stability in the service quality to 26,000 inhabitants of rural and difficult to access areas.

He emphasized that the stations include La Amelia-Mulas, El Manguito, Batey Matamoros, Yaguabo, the community of Oscar Lucero, Santa Cruz and the water treatment plant in Cacocum, with a capacity of 37 kilowatts, the largest in the country.

The projects include the creation of infrastructure to guarantee the operation of the equipment, as well as training activities for operators and managers operators by specialized brigades in 11 of the 14 municipalities of Holguin province, he explained.

The change of the energy matrix in the hydraulic sector also extends to the provinces of Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos and Las Tunas and has among its objectives the saving of maintenance costs, stability in water pumping and the reduction in the use of fossil fuels through the replacement of more than 3,000 pieces of equipment, 37 percent of the installed capacity.

Since 2014, in Cuba there has been a strategy for the exploitation of renewable energy sources, which includes biomass, hydroelectric, solar and wind, with the purpose of substituting the electricity generation electricity generation matrix.

Holguín has some 1,830 solar panels installed in 25 institutions in sectors such as education, in spite of the hardening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba since 1962.
