Holguín celebrates World Cities Day

Holguin, known internationally as the Cuban City of Parks, celebrates this Tuesday, October 31rst, the World Cities Day, approved by the United Nations with the goal of promoting the sustainable development of cities and encouraging cooperation among countries to plan urbanization.

Cities should be designed to live together, create opportunities, allow connection and interaction, and facilitate the sustainable use of shared resources.

In the province of Holguin, many activities have been developed, which began at the beginning of the month with World Habitat Day, in an extensive day, called Urban October, to promote the organization of urban areas, as part of the proposals of the Millennium Development Goals.

César Patterson Rodríguez, delegate of the National Institute of Urban Territorial Planning (INOTU), emphasized that this day includes the expansion of training on areas with special regulations, concentrated in the municipalities of Banes, Gibara and Rafael Freyre and inserted in the programs for the expansion of tourism.

The reforestation of the hill Loma de la Cruz, symbol of Holguín, through the planting of species typical of that area and other environmental education actions are carried out in coordination with forestry companies in the territory.

The Institute, formerly known as Physical Planning, is linked to government programs aimed at facilitating procedures for the population, including applications for housing, urban planning regulations, updating property titles, and payment of land.

Since 2014, the United Nations Organization convened the Urban October Day, with the aim of raising awareness of countries, cities, communities and their inhabitants around the world to improve life in these demarcations and ensure sustainable development.
