Lenin Oncology Emergency Unit resumes services

The Oncology Emergency Unit located at Vladimir Ilich Lenin General Teaching Hospital in Holguin, although it began operating at the beginning of 2018, about three months ago it underwent a rehabilitation process that restored its comfort, allowing it to resume providing services as of September 26.

This facility is essential for the hospital in view of the increasing incidence of oncological diseases in the province, the second cause of mortality at the end of 2022. Oncology patients who present pain, bleeding or require any particular procedure or attention are treated there.

According to the Head of the Medical Oncology Service, Dr. Ivian Gonzalez Moreno, “any patient who has any concern or who has an acute pathology or who has not been able to attend his or her consultation can go to this emergency department.

The reasons may be, for example, vaginal bleeding, head and neck bleeding, intestinal occlusion, or different pathologies, since the oncology group is divided into different multidisciplinary groups, where each of them deals with different pathologies.

“Therefore, any oncological patient suffering from an urgency or emergency can go to this on-call unit, which provides services 24 hours a day and has two on-call physicians and one in the hospital wards. On average, about thirty patients are assisted at the Oncology Emergency Unit every day,” the specialist pointed out.

This unit is currently located in the space formerly used as the Orthopedics on-call unit and is equipped with the required conditions, including beds with oxygen therapy installed. It has an observation room, a room for nursing care and a waiting room for patients and their families.

Thus, the reopening of this facility, even in the midst of the complex situation faced by the country, is an achievement of the Lenin Hospital, where the morbidity that assists the on-call body is higher every day, if it is taken into account that last year more than seven thousand emergency cases were attended in the on-call teams.
