An article by Cuban professor and tourism specialist José Luis Perelló, recalls that the Spanish airline Air Europe will operate flights with sustainable fuel (SAF) on trips that include Havana.
In his Facebook account, the expert explained that these are long-haul flights will initially Madrid Barajas International Airport and Havana International Airport once a month with biofuel, which will allow the company to save 50 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions every year.
Cepsa will supply 14.4 tons of SAF to Air Europa for one year, which will help the airline meet the objectives set by the European Union (EU) in the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative.
Perelló explained that the EU plans for European airlines to implement sustainable fuels increasingly to incorporate from two by 2025 to six percent by 2030, and 70 percent by 2050.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that SAF will contribute to reducing 65 percent of the emissions that aviation needs to achieve the net zero goal by 2050, and Air Europa is on the way already.
It was informed that the company has reached an agreement with Cepsa, which provides the biofuel manufactured in La Rábida Energy Park in Palos de la Frontera, souther Spain.
The biofuel produced at La Rábida Energy Park, in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), uses organic waste and used cooking oils for the biofuel to be used by Air Europa in its flights across several countries, which includes Havana, Cuiba.
Biofuels derived from biomass can be replenished readily, thus, biofuel is considered to be a source of renewable energy.
Biofuel is commonly advocated as a cost-effective and environmentally benign alterantive to fossil fuels like petroleum.
Countries like India are targeting to become carbon neutral by 2070, that is why, it is expanding use of biofuel in its transport sector.
