As of this Tuesday, August 15, Cuban banks will give a six percent bonus to all customers who make use of electronic payments for the acquisition of goods and services through payment cards or payment gateways.
Alberto Quiñones, vice-president of the Central Bank of Cuba (BCC), specified that this measure will not distinguish between the type of property that manages the business. Whenever payment is made through an electronic channel (electronic payments), the customer will receive the benefit, he assured.
The vice-president explained that bank branches make decisions based on logistics and cash availability, hence they have established administrative limits for natural persons based on this reality. These limits will disappear as the cash situation in the country improves.
When assessing the service situation of bank branches in the country, the vice-president of the Central Bank of Cuba described it as critical and assured that the current situation is not a consequence of bankarization.
According to Alberto Quiñones, the practice continues to be a high demand for cash withdrawals and not for deposits. People wait two and three hours in line to access services, thus electronic payments wil help them.
The BCC executive ratified that in Cuba the use of cash in operations is not eliminated and the banking system is aimed at prioritizing electronic payment channels.
It is not mandatory to pay by electronic means,” Quiñones assured, “but it is necessary for establishments to have all the means available for people to choose the payment method.
