As part of the options for sound recreation during the summer time, the Community Centers for Environmental Education in the Cuban province of Holguin promote activities focused on nature protection.
Municipalities such as Moa, Rafael Freyre and Gibara promote projection of audiovisual materials, story, drawing and poetry contests, protection of prioritized ecosystems and educational talks with the participation of schools and community actors.
Among the concrete examples of these programs is Ecoarte, a group for nature protection made up of more than 100 children from the elementary level, junior high school and high school in the municipality of Moa, headed by Melaneo Maden, its coordinator.
Maden stressed that one of the most important actions fon nature protection is the reforestation of mangrove forests, which act as natural barriers against intense weather phenomena and whose preservation is contemplated within the priorities of the Tarea Vida, the Cuban State’s plan to confront Climate Change.
He added that the program includes literary events with presentations of scientific texts and exchanges with specialists and researchers on environmental issues to contribute to the vocational training of the new generations.
In addition, on beaches such as Guardalavaca, with a large influx of vacationers during the summer season, solid waste collection and recycling of plastic containers from hotels in that resort, one of the most popular sun and beach destinations in the eastern part of the country, is carried out.
Holguín also promotes the application of the postulates of the circular economy, including the recycling of solid waste and the substitution of refrigerant gases that pollute the environment, one of the work objectives of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in Cuba.
