In view of the usual behavior of some pediatric diseases during the summertime, health authorities in Holguin consider to warn families on how to recognize the most common ailments during this period, as well as to transmit essential advice aimed at preventing their complications.

In that sense, the director of the Pediatric Hospital Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja, Dr. Héctor Pupo Rodríguez, explains that after the rainy season there is an increase in diarrhea cases. In case of acute diarrhea, it is essential not to administer any infusion at home because it can cause the death of the child. Natural and Traditional Medicine is forbidden in under five children, because far from improving the situation, it worsens health in these cases.
There is also the appearance of high respiratory symptoms because the infants are not yet protected against COVID-19 and because, sometimes, some members of the family violate the hygienic and sanitary prevention measures, said the specialist.

He added that thanks to the expertise of the pediatric care staff and the assistance of the family physicians, there have been no serious illnesses or deaths this year. “However, these are conditions that require special care, hospital admissions and strict observation. This situation can be avoided by preventing these illnesses”.
Regarding the incidence of diseases transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the pediatric intensivist also says that there is usually an increase in arbovirosis, including dengue.
“This hospitalization ward at this time of year usually experiences an increase in the number of cases and although none of those admitted is serious or complicated and evolves well, there are those with very low platelets and leukocytes, which can lead to immunosuppression among the main consequences, with the probability of a more torpid evolution in the event of any infection”.
