Gibara Film Festival (FICGibara) takes place from the first to the fifth of this month in the Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos with multiple activities of all artistic expressions, but the highlight of this event are film screenings, which is why we approached one of the works presented at the event: Documentary Virgilio desde el gabinete azul.
Virgilio desde el gabinete azul is a documentary by Cuban filmmaker Raydel Araoz about playwright, narrator and poet Virgilio Piñera; According to Lely Carrasco, who was in charge of the presentation of the material, it reconstructs Virgilio’s life and work from the representation of a Virgilio who writes his autobiography and letters to friends abroad, and from the crossed views of a theater director (Carlos Celdrán), a literary researcher (David Leiva) and a great friend (Antón Arrufat), whose opinions make up an unusual profile.
We must return to Virgilio

For Raydel Araoz, its director, Documentary Virgilio desde el gabinete azul can be distinguished by the fact that it deals with the figure of Virgilio, to whom we must return and return, and include him among the intellectuals to be addressed by the audiovisual.
“He is a very important figure for Cuban culture. I think the intention of studying his work, of being an essay, which is what this documentary on Virgilio’s work is, is one of its main points, and treating it in its entirety: theater, poetry, his personality, are the things that mark the documentary. A documentary that wants to be in itself a kind of theatrical staging”.
Araoz, who graduated from the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños and has directed several documentaries, is distinguished by a work that has as the center of his line of work important figures of Cuban culture: Nicolás Guillén, Samuel Feijóo, Virgilio and he has one in process about Joel James.
“I think that in these four documentaries you can make lines of art, anthropology, painting, theater, cinema, in short, you can make a map of Cuban culture and any audience that can see them all, can take a sketch of what has been the Cuban production and how the culture has moved with its lights, its shadows, its concerns that is more or less my project in the line of documentary, “said the filmmaker, who proudly has seen the audience’sreaction upon Documentary Virgilio desde el gabinete azul.
