Gibara International Film Festival starting this Tuesday

The 2023 edition of Gibara International Film Festival will begin today with the performance of La Colmenita children company in the community of El Güirito; this event will last until next Saturday, August 5th, in the homonymous coastal city, located in Holguin province.

Gibara International Film Festival, which pays tribute to the 20th anniversary of its founding by prominent Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás, will include in its extensive program the screening of films that will compete for awards in the categories of short fiction, feature film, documentary and animation.

Awards ceremony, special presentations…

At the opening gala, the Lucía de Honor Award will be presented to actor Luis Alberto García and costume designer Violeta Cooper from Holguín, while Jorge Perugorría will receive the award at the closing ceremony for his important role in the revival and relaunching of Gibara Film Festival between 2016 and 2022.

During Gibara Film Festival, a tribute will be paid to Sara Gómez, Cuba’s first woman filmmaker, with a restored copy of the film “De cierta manera”, her only feature film, and a selection of her works, for her outstanding career in the film world.

Among the special presentations will be “Silvio Rodriguez: My First Task”, directed by Catherine Murphy, a documentary that tells the story of the artist’s coming-of-age as a volunteer in the youth brigades of the Literacy Campaign, and also, “Fernanda and the Strange Case of the Message to Figueroa”, under the direction of Mario Rivas.

The panels “Exhibition and Distribution: the great challenges of today” and “A gender perspective for the audiovisual and the arts” will integrate the theoretical section of the Gibara International Film Festival, as well as talks on heritage and meetings to exchange experiences with artists of the medium, among them, Nestor Jimenez, Barbaro Marin and Ingrid Lobaina.

The local library will host audiovisual workshops for teenagers and young people, while the El Almacén cultural center will host performances by La Colmenita, the Tony’s Screams project and troubadours Leinier Verdecia and Ibet Rodríguez.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Nueva Trova will be held at the Plaza Da Silva, with the participation of Holguin-born singer-songwriters Manuel Leandro and Fernando Cabreja, and jazz will also be present with performances by Fígaro Jazz Club and Luis Barbería.
