Leuris Pupo and six other Cuban athletes are expected to participate in the World Shooting Sport Championship in Baku 2023, Azerbaijan, a qualifier for Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The roster is headed by double Olympic medalist Leuris Pupo, who in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol will be accompanied by the reigning Pan American and Central Caribbean champion, Havana native Jorge Felix Alvarez.
The event will be held from August 14 to 24 and will grant four places in each modality for the upcoming Olympic Games.
In addition to the “fast” shooters, the riflemen Dianelis Pérez and Lisbet Hernández, and the air and sport pistol specialists Laina Pérez, Sheyla González and Jorge Grau must travel.
“Our team will participate with the seven athletes with the best chances of results. This is a top-level event in which the best shots and competitive preparation will be sought in view of the Pan American Games of Santiago 2023,” said Arnaldo Rodríguez, national commissioner of this sport.
Last year, Cuba was present at the world event, which was the debut of Leuris Pupo, from Holguín, at that level.
Pupo became the island’s first athlete to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning gold in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol at the Lima 2022 Pan American Shooting Sport Championship.
