The bulk of plantain areas affected by Hurricane Irma strikes in the province of Holguín are already recovering, while crop planting of short crop cycles is intensifying in different companies and in the cooperative and peasant sector.
In the banana plantations, the most serious damage in the agricultural sector was concentrated in the wake of the meteorological phenomenon on September 8, the most distinctive item in the production of food of agricultural origin in the eastern territory.
The forces of the winds associated with the Irma overturned in questions of hours over four thousand hectares of this crop, of which were restored until today more than three thousand 600, fields that will be enriched progressively to return to sow as one of the works prioritized in the integral program of recovery of the agricultural sector of Holguín.
Verónica Rangel, head of the management post at the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture, emphasized to ACN the effort undertaken by the habitual and mobilized workers of this agency in the promotion of recuperative tasks, and at the same time the planting of those crops short crop cycles.
In the latter case, it meant the promotion of more than 1,300 hectares of tender maize, as an alternative to the absence of food crops for rational distribution to the population, taking into account that it is a feasible item to collect between 70 and 80 days after being sown.
This option offers the possibility of having greater volumes of this food compared to the traditional ones of previous stages and that the families can use them in several variants for their consumption, mainly by the elaboration of the coveted tamale.
