Scientific Study in Holguin Characterizes Endemic Flora

Research on the status of populations of endemic endangered flora in the Sierra de Nipe plateau, one of the most important natural reserves in eastern Cuba, reports its first results in the northeatern province of Holguin.

Raima Cantillo, a researcher at the city's botanical garden, said that this study includes Phidiasia lindavii, Tetralix nipensis, Buxus köhlerii, Siphocampylus ekmanii and Tabebuia pulverulenta, endemic to that mountainous ecosystem.

These varieties, said the specialist, do not have common names and reproduce among the vegetation of charrascal, prickly shrubs characteristic of this mountain, located more than 60 kilometers from the provincial head.

Cantillo noted that research has determined that the populations of these species are between one and a hundred adult individuals approximately, which is an alert to promote plans for integrated management of varieties.

In addition, the negative impact of meteorological phenomena such as hurricanes, forest fires and human action on the reproductive cycle of plants was noted, she said.

These results will be applied mainly in new investments aimed at expanding nature tourism, one of the main potentialities of this sector in the province, which is based on sustainable development.

Norkis Ochoa, a specialist in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, also stressed the importance of environmental education actions in communities close to the habitat of these species.

The Botanical Garden of Holguin emerged in 1998 and dedicates its work to the protection of more than 700 endemic species concentrated in the mountainous areas of the region.

In the eastern territory there are 1,500 indigenous varieties, of which more than 250 are classified in some category of threat, according to the Red Book of the Cuban Vascular Flora. / By Eileen Molina Fernandez - ACN / Taken from Al Dia.
