Cuba is increasingly promoting access to the Internet throughout the country, but rejects the use that some people now make of this space to misinform, incite hatred and violence.
At present, more than five million users use the network of networks in this Caribbean nation, from cell phones or via Internet services; in addition, institutional connectivity has been developed, with a figure of more than 50 thousand accesses, said the executive president of the telecommunications company Etecsa, Tania Velázquez.
In the television program Mesa Redonda, the official added that in 2021 alone, more than 2,700 accesses have been installed in educational, research and medicine production centers, as well as in polyclinics, hospitals and isolation centers, branches and ATMs, offices for paperwork, among other places. In addition, there are more than 2,300 navigation rooms.
The Internet development policy in Cuba advocates the use of digital platforms as an important channel of communication and interaction, including the government with its citizens, but based on the respect, protection and integrity of all people.
The Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich, denounced that in recent times the actions of the United States have been very convulsive to, through digital platforms, promote disinformation and encourage violence.
He pointed out that Cuba has denounced such facts, but the northern nation has not given a response.
Cuban Deputy Minister of Communications, Wilfredo González, said that social media platforms have broken their own rules by allowing hate messages against this country, which has been denounced.
Also, transmissions of amateur radio stations with contents that stimulate public disorder and violence on the island have been systematically detected, he cited as another example.
'Because of all these elements we reaffirm that the United States is using cyberspace as a weapon of unconventional warfare,' the vice-president affirmed.
Cuba has since yesterday a new legal framework on telecommunications, which will enhance, among other aspects, the model of action for response to cybersecurity incidents, available in the Official Gazette.
This is intended to guarantee, through the management of cybersecurity incidents, the prevention, detection and timely response to possible criminal and harmful activities that may occur in the virtual space.
On the other hand, although Cuba does not have a service contract with social networking platforms due to the blockade imposed by the United States more than 60 years ago, it can register and report such violations, many of which even break the rules of those online sites.
