Obama's Clemency for Political Prisoner Peltier Denied

The U.S. Office of the Pardon Attorney has announced that President Barack Obama officially denied clemency to imprisoned Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who has been in prison for more than 40 years on charges that have been proven false.

Puerto Rican independence activist and political prisoner, Oscar Lopez Rivera, appreciated Cuba's support of the campaign for his release and his return home. Lopez Rivera was finally granted a commutation earlier this week after more than 35 years in U.S. prisons.

Fifth CELAC Summit for Maintaining Unity Within Diversity

"Cuba will attend the event hoping to contribute to strengthening the Community founded in 2011 and in the same way strengthen unity within diversity," said the counytry's Deputy Foreign Minister, Abelardo Moreno, speaking at a January 18 press conference, prior the 5th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), slated for January 24-25, in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.
