Holguin Opens Photo Exhibition by Antonio Guerrero

The exhibition "Toda la Patria esta en la Mujer" by the Hero of the Republic of Cuba, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, was inaugurated and opened to the public. The show at La Periquera Provincial Museum is part of a tour across the province of Holguin by the Cuban Five Gerardo, Antonio, Ramon and Fernando.

Simplicity, sensitivity and tenacity that characterize Cuban women are perceived in each of the 55 portraits drawn in pencil, from a maximum security prison in the United States, most of the time with minimal conditions.

"The first woman I painted was my mom and the drawings of Indian Casiguaya and the slave Carlota. I draw them from the descriptions, but the remaining pictures were made from images from books or pictures," said Antonio.

The exhibit comprises images of Cuban women like Mariana Grajales, Vilma Espin, Celia Sanchez, Melba Hernandez and Leonor Perez. Also mothers, wives and sisters of the Five.

"Drawing allowed us to resist and was also the way to fight, to face the harsh conditions imposed on us during the days of imprisonment." When I looked at the magazines, I found pictures of Cuban patriots and wondered where the patriot woman was? So I started to paint. In the struggle for the Five women was present in a very special way and an example of this are Graciela Ramirez, President of the International Committee of Solidarity with the Cuban Five; Alicia Jkrapo and Waffica Ibrahim, among others. During the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), Antonio Guerrero received the August 23 Distinction, the highest awarded granted by the FMC.
