Free the Cuban Five, a Demand in Calixto Garcia
One of the organizers of the event, Luis Barboza, president of the Jose Benito Escobar Workers Union Confederations told Prensa Latina the forum’s goal is to discuss and approve a plan of action to step up the fight for the release of the Cuban Five, as Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez are known.
Prior to the beginning of the event, August 25, Irma Sehwerert will meet with important Nicaraguan personalities, including the president of Nicaragua’s National Assembly, Rene Nunez, according to a press release posted on the Cubaminrex website.
She will also meet with members of the Parliamentary Group of Solidarity with Cuba and will attend a meeting organized by the Mi Verde Sonrisa (My Green Smile) children protection foundation, led by Nicaraguan Commander of the Revolution Tomas Borge.
Rene Gonzalez has been in jail for almost 13 years, as well as his four fellow countrymen. They have undegone arbitrary punishments and some of them have not been allowed to receive family visits nor to keep in contact with their relatives in Cuba.
The Cuban Five were arrested in 1998 for monitoring terrorist actions led by Miami-based anti Cuba groups. They are serving sentences that go from 15 years to two life terms plus 15 years.
