Rider Diaz Wins Eastern Cuban Chess Tourney

FIDE Master (FM) Rider Diaz, who comes from the province of Holguin, won the Eastern Cuban Chess Tourney, which was held at the Provincial Sports Museum, located at the Calixto Garcia baseball stadium in the city of Holguin.

FIDE Master (FM) Rider Diaz (Holguin), Grand Master (GM) Juan Borges (Guantanamo) and FM Michel Alejandro Diaz, from Las Tunas, reached 7,5 points, but the tiebreak launched Rider Diaz to the first place. Juan Borges ranked second and Michel Alejandro Diaz went there.

From the fourth to the eighth, the standings went as follows: MF Arnaldo Fernandez de la Vara (Holguin - 7 points); MF Cesar Alejandro Perez (Las Tunas - 6 points), GM Luis Manuel Perez (Holguin - 6 points), FM Manuel Charon (Guantanamo, - 5,5 points) and Enmanuel de la Fe with 5 points.

The standing was completed by FM Augusto Cesar Campos (Santiago de Cuba – ninth with 4,5 points); FM Roisbel Marrero (Holguin - 4,5 points); National Master (NM) Jorge Gonzalez (Granma), Provincial Expert Jesus Cuenca (Holguin), all of them with 2,5 points.

The event, marked by high fighting spirit, had no winner until the eleventh and last round.

FM Rider Diaz and GM Juan Borges grabbed the berth for the National Championship next January – February (2016) in the western province of Matanzas.

It is good to praise that three players from Holguin province were the youngest in the event: Arnaldo Fernandez de la Vara (15 years old), Roisbel Marrero and Jesus Cuenca (16 years old).

It is also good to praise the performance of national judges Alfredo Ochoa Feria (Holguin) and Gabriel Alcolea Hernandez (Santiago de Cuba), as well as the staffers from the Provincial Sports Museum, a great host again.
