Holguinero Roberto Almenares, of the 60 kilogram division, won the silver medal at the Pan American Cup in Lima, Peru, second of four qualifying events for the Pan American Games there in 2019.
Almenares lost in the title discussion to the experienced Brazilian Reenan Torres, in a very close match.
Among the most anticipated divisions, the 90 kg, the first place was taken by Asley Gonzalez in the dispute with his fellow countryman Ivan Silva, who fell by three Shidos (penalties) in 3:35 minutes of the fight, according to the sheets of notes sent to JIT by Dr. Uvelino Moreno.
The other golden metals were taken by Osniel Solís in 60 kg, Magdiel Estrada in 73 kg, Jorge Martínez in 81, José Armenteros in 100 and Andy Granda in more than 100; for the female the top prizes were won by Melissa Hurtado in 48 kg, Maylín del Toro in 63 and Kaliema Antomarchi in 78, a sex in which a great surprise arrived with the bronze of Idalys Ortiz.
Ortiz lost a 9:57 minute fight with Puerto Rican Melissa Mojica to a third Shido in a weight in which only four athletes showed up.
In silver, Nahomi Acosta finished in 52 and Onix Cortés in 70. The other third place went to Analis Dorvigní in 57. Only Zamarit Gregorio in 48 could not climb because of the preseas.
Cuba (9-4-2) finished first in the medal table ahead of Brazil (2-1-2), Dominican Republic (1-3-1), Mexico (1-2-3) and Puerto Rico (1-0-0-0), among 18 countries.
