Holguin Homage to the Martyrs of the Bloody Easters

pascauas lisandra01Cuban National Poet, Nicolas Guillen, wrote a moving poem to the glory of the 23 revolutionary youths killed in 1956, in the country's northeastern region, by the assassins of dictator Fulgencio Batista. The nation was getting ready to mark Christmas but many homes went mourning because their children were taken away and killed in several straight nights.

Dutch Presence in Cuban Waters

A Dutch merchant ship was wrecked May 31, 1698, in the rugged Cuban area now known as Punta del Holandes (Point of the Dutch), where currents intersect each other and waves do not stop moving. There lie anchors and cannons, sheltered in a very natural environment.

Calixto Garcia Iñiguez, Illustrous Holguin Born Patriot

In December 11, 1898, Calixto Garcia Iñiguez - one of the most remarkable Cuban heroes - passed away in the USA while fluffing a mission; it was a huge loss for Cuba because the Holguin born hero became a General for his own merits while fighting in the three wars for the country's independence from Spanish colonial rule, in the 19th century. Today all Cuba remembers him 116 years later.
