Cuba's Challenge of its Aging Population

She says she has always loved Cuba, the land she never though of leaving, that's why, she feels the joy of being so closely linked to her family, which meets around her to celebrate her 104 birthday.

Manuela that has a large family that loves her admits one secret to live longer relies on living free of stress, eating sound food, well balanced, feeling you love others and they love you.

"I got married with my only husband when I was 21; that was a beautiful thing, it was love at first sight, which lasted for many years. He was handsome, lovely, hardworking and very considerate towards me. Sadly he parted too soon, and I still miss him."

She was young when her mother passed away, and with the support of her husband she looked after her seven siblings; today, they all appreciate that, "we're a very united family," she said.

Manuela says she as a radio goer likes tuning Radio Angulo to get informed on the events taking place in Holguin, Cuba and the world; but also radio shows broadcast by CMKO station.

Talking to Manuela Velazquez Perez is a deep pleasure; she just turned 104 but is still as pretty as jovial, talkative and in love with Cuba, Holguin, her birthplace, and her family.
