The Moon's crust has stretched, according to U.S. experts who analyzed high-resolution pictures of the Moon's surface, where there are tiny valleys.

The photos, taken by the NASA probe Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), also show small and narrow trenches, suggesting that the Moon's crust is separated into these areas, the experts say.

These trenches indicate the presence of forces acting to reduce the size of the Moon and were defeated in other places by other forces that try to separate it, they said.

According to Thomas Watters, of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington and author of the research, they believe that the Moon is in a general state of global concentration due to the cooling of its core that is still hot.

However, this process cannot be large or the small valleys could never be formed, he says.

This discovery, made by chance, confirms that the Earth's natural satellite is active, and that research should continue in this direction, scientists say. / Source - PL
