Former Soviet Ambassador to Cuba Dies

Vitali Vorotnikov, former president of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and former ambassador to Cuba, died at age 86, as informed on Monday.

Born on January 20, 1926, in Voronezh, a city in the southwestern part of Russia, of working-class origin, and a graduate in Mechanical Engineering for the aircraft industry, he occupied
different responsibilities in the leadership of the Party, in which he was a member of its Politburo until 1990.

He was decorated in 1986 as Hero of Socialist Work, one of the most important awards granted
by the former Union of Socialist Soviet Republics (USSR), the Prensa Latina news agency recalls.

In 1982, Cuba gave him the Order of Solidarity and he received in his country the Lenin (1971,
1973, 1982, 1986), the October Revolution, and the Red Flag (three times) orders, as well as
the Great Homeland War Order in first degree, among other awards.

After concluding his work as ambassador of the USSR to Havana (1979-1982), he returned to his country, where he occupied the post of first secretary of the territorial Committee of the
Communist Party of the Soviet Union (PCUS) in Krasnodar.

In 1983, he assumed the post of president of the Council of Ministers of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and in October, 1988, he became President of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of that republic and Vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. / Source - PL
