The slow walking or a weak handshake may warn of risk of neurodegenerative disease, according to a study released Thursday.

Researchers at Boston Medical Center found in a study of 2 140 individuals of 62 years that when a person walks fast or have a steady hand has a good brain health, otherwise it would be a warning sign of physical deterioration.

A previous investigation revealed that a slow pace is an indicator of heart problems, but the present work shows that also warn of the likelihood of developing neurodegenerative diseases.

After 11 years of monitoring this group of people, 34 of them developed dementia and 79 had permanent or transient stroke, said the study that will be presented to the annual meeting of the U.S. Academy of Neurology, headquartered in New Orleans.

According to scientists, people who walk slowly are 1.5 times more likely to have dementia and those who give a weak handshake have a 42 percent higher risk of suffer strokes or ischemic attacks. / Source - PL
