Women in Holguin Against Breast Cancer
In the 20th FLASOG Congress held in Managua, Nicaragua, the specialist of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital in the city of Holguin, was told of the acknowledgement for her life career, so much in women’s’ care as in teaching.
The president of the Cuban Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Blanca Rosa Manzano Nieves, was passed on the reward on behalf of Ana, who was born in Camaguey but has lived in Holguin almost all her life.
In an interview to this reporter, Ana brought forward her hard times as a child and a teenager, and her struggle as a student at the Institute of Camaguey, where she met young martyr Jesus Suarez Gayol.
After the victory of the (Cuban) Revolution, she said, she got dressed in the uniform of the Students Militias and the Literacy Campaign, and as a member of the first contingent in the brigade that was trained in Varadero beach to fight the scourge of ignorance.
Later Ana took the road of Medicine in 1961, until she got the degree as an Obstetrician.
In the early days of the Cuban Revolution many doctors and professors left the country, that was why, the students with best marks became Assistants, thus the start for her love to teaching.
When Ana Uribasterra Campos got her degree in Medicine, love took her to the city of Holguin where she has been doing it all for the sound birth of children, something really fascinating for her.
Since 1970 she has been working at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital, with books, researches, innovations, devoted care for the steady growth of the infant mortality rate in the province what has been her every day zeal.
At the moment, Ana is a consultant of Perinatology at the Lenin hospital and runs the project “Humanization of the Childbirth” whose goal is raising awareness of the family, husbands, pregnant women, in fact all the people and staffers that have to do with the natural birth to make it duly happen, without risky surgeries.
For Ana Uribasterra Campos, a doctor and a teacher, work is devotion, pleasure, full abandonment to work, thus her remarkable results and now a Latin American acknowledgement.
