May Day inspires Holguin residents with several motivations, among them the 7th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), and the 90th birthday of historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

But also the 55 anniversary of the Literacy Campaign which led Cuba become free of illiteracy, and other significant issues and events.
Out of the 500 000 locals to take part in the parade, the block of the union of Education, Sciences and Sports will be leading the workers' march in Holguin.
Some of the locals that participated in the Literacy Campaign in 1961 will join the parade.
Holguin self-employees will be one of the main characters of the 2016 May Day parade, who are grouped in 413 union cells, mainly transport workers.
On the preparations for May Day, George Batista Perez, the secretary general of the Cuba Workers Confederation in the province of Holguin, said they are putting things ready foe the fiesta.
And prior to the workers' celebration unions are developing several activities to salute the date and boosting production plans.
