Holguin Remembers the Martyrs of December Ninth, 1957

Holguin people paid tribute today to the martyrs of December ninth, 1957. Those courageous men were terribly killed by the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista in response to the execution by local underground fighters of bloodthirsty Fermin Cowley Gallego.

At the monument of the Sis Columnas that rises in Holguin to their memory, right in the site they were assassinated, a solemn ceremony was held.

The event was presided over Luis Antonio Torres Iribar, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in the province of Holguin; Julio Cesar Estupiñan Rodriguez, the president of the Provincial Assembly of the People's Power; and Brigadier ® William Galvez Rodriguez; and other leaders.

Wreaths on behalf of Holguin people and family members of the martyrs were placed at the monument.

As part of the the event some workers were given the ID as PCC members.

Osmany Viñals Garcia, a member of the Politburo in the municipality of Holguin, said in the closing words that the example of the courageous revolutionaries is alive today in arms of the Homeland.
