Drought in Holguin Set a Little Back in October 2015
October closed with deficits in accumulated rainfall by 8.5 percent in the northeastern Cuban province of Holguin, which made the permanent drought effect to be reduced by 24.5 percent.

Axel Hidalgo, a specialist of the Provincial Meteorological Center said that the tenth month of 2015 had an average cumulative rainfall of 151.7 mm, valid for 102.1 percent compared to the monthly historical average according to Standard 1971-2 000.

At the end of October, the cumulative were favorable equal to previous months in all municipalities of the province, with the exception of Moa, where deficits persisted in the weak type.

The accumulated rainfall during August, September and October behaved favorable to the municipalities of the west of the province, while were observed deficits that reached moderate and severe in Mayari and Moa, in that order.

However, for the last six and twelve months from May to October and from November to October, respectively, even when there is a decrease in the intensity of rainfall deficits in Holguin, they continue observing deficiencies that reach severe and extreme categories in Mayari and Las Cuchillas de Moa.

At the end of October, although the spatial distribution of meteorological drought decreased compared to the one that occurred in previous months (70.1 percent in August and 38.8 in September), the municipalities that have the greatest difficulties are Banes, Mayari, Sagua de Tanamo and Moa. / By Alexis Rojas Aguilera / Translated by Al Dia.
