Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez was one of the first secretaries of the Party who is still remembered for his consecration and results in the different branches of society in the province of Holguin, the third largest population of Cuba with more than one million inhabitants.
The newly elected President of the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba arrived in the territory in 2003 from Villa Clara and already had a vast experience in partisan work, which was decisive to implement new strategies in the political and ideological work in support of the development projects throughout Holguin.
Because of his close connection with the various organizations and sectors of the province, he was soon distinguished as another Holguin, a name he reiterated as a sign of his attachment to the new responsibility assigned by the highest leadership of the Party.
In these functions he worked until mid-2009 when he was promoted to Minister of Higher Education, leaving on each front of the society of the eastern territory the image of a political leader able to imbue the masses with new styles of work.
At first glance, the population of Holguín perceived that Díaz-Canel was a leader who admired those who dedicated themselves to detail in the realization of everything.
The then first secretary of the Party in the province of Holguín was distinguished by the permanent demand for everything to be done with aesthetics and high quality.
In this context, Díaz-Canel prioritized the rescue and operation of hotel, cultural, gastronomic and sports facilities, as well as those dedicated especially to the services of the population, taking its rigor and demand, day after day, moving constantly from one municipality to another.
It was always very demanding and reasonable at the same time, commented Faustino Fonseca, current director of culture in the territory, who during Miguel Díaz-Canel's stay in Holguín served as an official of the Provincial Party Committee.
It was a stage of consolidation in the different socio-political scenarios and of notable advances in the productive and economic branches, in which the presence and rigor with which the first secretary of the Party evaluated and followed up each one of the tasks, meant the manager.
During the more than six years in which Miguel Díaz-Canel was the maximum political leader in Holguín, the population and those in charge of institutions and organizations appreciated his perseverance, especially during moments of mobilization in the face of the onslaught of meteorological phenomena, among which was Hurricane Ike, September 2007.
He was distinguished above all by his style of work and the appropriate methods of analyzing each activity in detail, said Pavel Rodríguez Rodríguez, who as a first investor and then director of the Provincial Roadway Center, accompanied Díaz-Canel on several occasions in tours of construction sites. of this sector.
In this branch, as well as in health, nickel, education, sports, water resources and services in general to the population, the then first Secretary of the Party in Holguin demonstrated high preparation and consecration in the performance of his duties .
