The Ax of Holguín, official symbol of this eastern province, was awarded to the Puerto Rican patriot Oscar López Rivera for his tireless work in favor of social justice and the unity of the people
Delivered in the Square of the Major General Revolution Calixto García Iñiguez, the encouragement is the highest recognition granted by the Provincial Assembly of People's Power to those men and women who are distinguished by their outstanding merits in different spheres of society.

Carmen Bejerano, Secretary of this body of Government, signified the dignity and resilience of López Rivera, whom imperialism was unable to crush their spirit in the almost 36 years that kept him prisoner.

The Ax of Holguin was instituted like official symbol of the province on May 28, 1981 and is a ceremonial exponent of the agro-pottery groups that inhabited the island of Cuba upon the arrival of the Spanish in the fifteenth century.
