The Ax of Holguín, official symbol of this eastern province, was awarded to the Puerto Rican patriot Oscar López Rivera for his tireless work in favor of social justice and the unity of the people
Delivered in the Square of the Major General Revolution Calixto García Iñiguez, the encouragement is the highest recognition granted by the Provincial Assembly of People's Power to those men and women who are distinguished by their outstanding merits in different spheres of society.
Carmen Bejerano, Secretary of this body of Government, signified the dignity and resilience of López Rivera, whom imperialism was unable to crush their spirit in the almost 36 years that kept him prisoner.
The Ax of Holguin was instituted like official symbol of the province on May 28, 1981 and is a ceremonial exponent of the agro-pottery groups that inhabited the island of Cuba upon the arrival of the Spanish in the fifteenth century.
López Rivera, thanked at the ceremony for the high recognition of the affection shown by Cubans during his stay in the Greater Antilles since he arrived to the Island and he added that finally the dream that for many decades he yearned to visit it came true.
He praised the humanitarian work of the Caribbean nation in the international context and assured that the strength and energy that emanates from the faces of Cuban children and youth is not appreciated anywhere else, an experience that aspires to turn into knowledge and motivation for the achievement of the independence of Puerto Rico.
"When you fight for love and conviction," he emphasized, "jail becomes another stage for the fight against ideas."
The combatant urged the libertarian movements of the world to continue the fight for a better world.
The day of this Thursday in the eastern city of about 300 thousand inhabitants, also included a tour of the main cultural institutions of the city such as the Museum La Periquera, National Monument and the Birthplace of Major General Calixto García Iñíguez.
Accompanied by Luis Antonio Torres Iribar, member of the Central Committee and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Holguín, the Puerto Rican received, in addition, a replica of the image of Fidel made by the renowned master of plastic arts Cosme Proenza.
The Puerto Rican visitor also toured the Historic Site of Birán, in the municipality of Cueto, Fidel's homeland and the president of the Councils of State and Ministers, Army General Raul Castro Ruz, where he learned about the heritage values of that site, Declared National Monument in February 2009.
