Holguín is the fourth oldest province in the country with around 216 thousand older adults. For this reason, the public health sector has devised strategies to respond to this social phenomenon with the expansion of the capacities of some Nursing Homes and Grandparent Homes.
As pointed out by Elizabeth Vázquez Pérez, Social Work Manager in the Provincial Department of the elderly: "This year is expected to incorporate three new Grandparent Homes to work: one in the municipalities of Báguanos and Calixto García and one in the Popular Council of San Andrés. The Báguanos is about to open with 25 capacities. Regarding Nursing Homes, it is planned to expand 28 capacities in the nursing home of Cueto and complete the 100 in Gibara, as this is the oldest municipality in the province. "
In these facilities a comprehensive service is provided that includes food, activities inside and outside the center and rehabilitation. There the elderly who live alone or those who present some problem and their family for a specific time ask for this service, it is evaluated by the health area, and if appropriate, the capacity is granted.
The initiative to expand the capacities of these health institutions will have a direct impact on Holguin families who can not take full-time care of their elders.
The fact of facing population aging as an irreversible process implies the need for an effective action of all social instances, in order to guarantee better living conditions for this population segment.
