Baritone Raul Camayd was the promoter of a huge cultural even that took place in the nicknamed Cuban City of the Parks, the 16 of November, 1962: the debut of the Holguin Lyrics Theater which has given much prestige to performing arts in Holguin. That night the Holguin Lyrics Theater took to the stage "Los Gavilanes" - a Spanish zarzuela by Jacinto Guerrero which the company included in its repertoire for years.
Camayd that passed away in September 15th, 1980 was the first director of the company baptized after Rodrigo Prats to acknowledge the professional links of the great Cuban composer and the group.
This baritone was also one of the most important interpreters of the Belle Canto in Cuba, who played unforgettable characters like Juan in the zarzuela Los Gavilanes and the Count of Luxemburg, in the homonymous operetta.
Workers, teachers, students, farmers and housewives pioneered the Holguin Lyrics Theater, who next saw students from the School of Arts and later from the Belle Canto Faculty of the Higher Institute of the Arts opened in Holguin, joining them the following years.
The first top figures and the young talents have not alone achieved non stop rejuvenation, but also keep the prestige won by the Company in the national and international arena.
The Holguin Lyrics Theater keeps establishing guidelines in Belle Canto and all the artistic projects they take part in.
In addition to Raul Camayd, other figures have given prestige to the Holguin Lyrics Theater like Gloria Herce, Maria Luisa Clark, Nayade Proenza, Juan Jose Ricardo, Latzis Mendez, Romarico Leyva, Julio Proenza, and those that came later: Ernesto Infante, Maria Dolores Rodriguez, Liudmila Perez, Alfredo Mas and Yuri Hernandez, among others.
In barely 53 years, the Holguin Lyrics Theater has taken to the stage over a hundred pieces, among them zarzuelas, operas, operettas, musical revues, concerts and recitals.
In addition to "Los Gavilanes" the Holguin Lyrics Theater has presented "Luisa Fernanda," "Maria La O," "Amalia Batista," "La Traviata," "¡Viva Verdi!" and "Pharaoh Court."
Today, on the occasion of 53 birthday of the Holguin Lyrics Theater, the National Board of the Jose Marti Cultural Society granted the prestigious Belle Canto Company the award Utilidad de la Virtud, whose members received with much joy.
