The book, compiled by Cuadernos Papiro editing house, was given to the Holy Father in a case carved with the Cuban flan, designed by sculptor Luis Silva and made together with craftsman Omer Ricardo.
The case made of planks of a royal palm tree, brought from Barajagua, National Monument, and the first place the Virgen de la Caridad was worshiped, after being found in the waters of Nipe Bay, in 1612.
Tatiana Zuñiga, who runs the editing house, admitted to ACN it was not easy at all to conceive the present for Pope Francis, which would be genuinely Cuban, that would depict the people's true spiritual richness, and that would touch everyone and would be natural, beautiful and handmade.
The book, barely three copies, opens with a reproduction of an old plate that shows the route of the Virgen de la Caridad, since it was found, till it finally was placed in the town of El Cobre, and the letter addressed by the Cuban veterans of the struggle for the Homeland's independence to Pope Benedictus XV asking to declared the Virgen de la Caridad de El Cobre as Cuba's Patron Saint.
In the book are included 14 texts by remarkable voices of the Hispanic, Latin American and Cuban literature, printed on handmade paper, among them Jose Marti, Dulce Maria Loynaz, Nicolas Guillen, Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda, Luisa Perez de Zambrana, Jose Lezama Lima, Raul Ferrer, Carilda Oliver, Cintio Vitier and Juan Ramon Napoles Fajardo – nicknamed El Cucalambe.
This book, illustrated with original pieces by local artists Cosme Proenza, Leticia Leyva, Javier Diaz, Jose Emilio Leyva, Ronald Guillen and Magalis Reyes, among others, is a collective project which brought together prestigious artists from Holguin province, with different esthetic approaches, all inspired on Our Lady of Charity, further the religious scope, but also as a cultural symbol and Cuban identity.
One of those copies will be on exhibition soon at one of the arts galleries of the city of Holguin.
The by Cuadernos Papiro editing house, the only of its type in Cuba, stands out in the promotion of literature and fine arts thru books printed on handmade paper, with the goal of backing thru arts, an ecological conscience among creators and the community. / By Juan Pablo Carreras – ACN / Translated by Radio Angulo.
