Cuba's Marine Protection System Praised
Robert Hueter, an expert from the Marino Mote Laboratory, in US state of Florida, said that a high-quality scientific work is needed to get to know sharks in Cuba much better.

The US specialist presented the results of a recent US-Cuba joint monitoring activity on sharks during the 10th Congress on Marine Sciences, underway at Havana's Convention Center.

Hueter praised the Cuban coastal protection system, which favors this kind of scientific activity.

The joint monitoring of sharks took place both on the northern and southern coasts of Cuba and resulted in important conclusions.

According to the research, some shark species are mostly found near Havana in certain periods the year; they usually approach the coast at night and remain in deep waters during the day. The experts also noted that some species are under poor preservation conditions.

The joint work by Cuban and US experts was followed by Discovery Channel, which produced a TV series entitled Sharks in Cuba. / CNA.
