Scientific Centers called to increase contribution to economy

Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, the Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, (CITMA) invited the countries scientific centers to contribute to the national economy, on Friday in Havana

Each center must end its research, development and innovation cycle to give a superior contribution to the formation of the Gross Domestic Product, said Perez Montoya during a special appearance at the annual assembly of the Environmental Agency.

She added that there is still some reticence in exploiting in this sense making it necessary to establish specific indicators in spending, evaluate its results, major control of the processes and superior integration among the institutions.

Perez Montoya member of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party praised the management range of the Environmental Agency in the socio-economic environmental development, conception, generalization and integration of knowledge, services and international cooperation.

The President of the Environmental Agency, Maritza Garcia Garcia, pointed out that among the main results of past year were the termination of projects related with climate change, impacts, mitigation and adapting, sustainable use of biologic diversity in addition to meteorology and sustainable development.

She broadened the issue with the elaboration of scenarios for phonological development, the protection of agricultural cultivations and environmental areas of interest in the province of Ciego de Avila, adjustment of norms for the prognosis of irrigation and environmental aspects of the water basins and coastal areas east of Havana.

The specialist also mentioned the updating of the National Strategy of Biodiversity and Action Plan, the natural history of groups of biotic of the Caribbean, modeling the increase of the sea level and waves that generate flooding, as well as its influence in oil spills.

The annual assembly of the Environmental Agency was held in the Educational Scientific Exchange Center of the Ministry of Education where directives, technicians and specialists coincided that the State Plan to face climate change is a priority.

The Cuban National Aquarium, Museum of Natural History and the Institutes of Tropical Geography, Astronomy and Geophysics, Meteorology, Ocean Sciences in addition to Ecology and Systematic are adjunct to the Environmental Agency.

In addition, the Environmental Agency is one of the two agencies of CITMA, the other is the Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies.
